  • In HK during CNY(Chinese New Year)

Though I couldn’t attend all the CNY activities in HK, I did have a good time during this short stay…….

On the 1st day of the CNY, reporting duty to operate a flight to HKG, at our office in Vancouver aiport I collected my first “Lai Sees” (Red packets) from the company and my fellow co-workers. The loading of the flight was very light as fewer people flying after the CNY rush.

We then went for tea at Soho area and had a long chat  till night…

  • Graduation

Sun afternoon attended a friend Graduation Ceremony, I felt very happy for him cos after nearly 5 years of hard work he finally got the Degree.  To him it’s a great achievement since he did it part time, for me I think I would have given up due to my laziness.  The ceremony was  held inside the main hall of the HongKong University, with it’s Victorian style of architecture and all the Professors and the Graduates were wearing their  ’Gown’ the whole scene looked like the Dining Hall in the Harry Potter movie….

    IMGP3557 IMGP3564 IMGP3568 IMGP3581 IMGP3598

After some picture taking at the University we went to have a little Champagne celebration at the Island Shangri-la Hotel Lobby Lounge

    IMGP3606

And a Buffett dinner at the Cafe Too at the same hotel. Though the food was not bad..actually if you like Asian cusine, like Japanese sashimi, sushi, Sea food like Oysters, Cantonese stir fired, soup noodles/congee, or even a light touches of curry..you will find it a very sumptous one. For me, I will miss the Roast Beef at the Craving station…..

  • Freedom and Regulation

Read this news( an extract) regarding 2 men being arrested due to they have more than one wife at the same time…..and I think  how  Freedom and Regulation can get a balance?

    Bountiful leaders charged with polygamy

On Wednesday around 7:45 a.m., eight plainclothes RCMP officers in unmarked cars drove up to the homes of polygamous leaders Winston Blackmore and James Oler in southeastern British Columbia.

They arrested Blackmore, 52, and Oler, 44, and charged them with the criminal offence of practising polygamy. It may not be the first time that anyone in Canada has been charged with polygamy. But it is definitely the first time anyone has been charged since the 1800s.

Both men — the most important spiritual leaders in the fundamentalist Mormon community — were cooperative.

Four officers took the men in separate cars to Cranbrook, more than 100 kilometres away from their homes outside Creston in southeastern B.C.

They went to the Cranbrook RCMP detachment where — by phone — a judicial justice of the peace listened to the facts presented by the officers.

The RCMP asked that the men be released with conditions. Those conditions, agreed to by the JJP, are that they report twice monthly to Creston RCMP, surrender their passports, stay in British Columbia and not enter into or perform any plural marriages — celestial marriages as these fundamentalist Mormon leaders call them.

They will make their first court appearances on Jan. 21 in Creston.

Blackmore, who has had 26 wives and has more than 108 children, is the spiritual leader to about half the community. He is also the head of the Mormon Hills School Society, a government-funded independent school.

Twenty women are named in the indictment as having been in a polygamous or conjugal union with Blackmore between May 1, 2005 and Dec. 8, 2006.

Only two women are listed in the Oler indictment, which covers the period between Nov. 1, 2004 and Oct. 8, 2008.

Oppal said none of the women are minors now, but some may have been when they entered into the religious marriages.

Oler is the bishop of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS). He was appointed by prophet Warren Jeffs, who was convicted in 2007 as an accomplice to the rape of a 14-year-old in Utah. Jeffs is in jail in Arizona, where he faces similar charges and he faces other charges in Texas.

The FLDS is a breakaway sect that has no connection to the mainstream Mormon church, which is formally called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The LDS renounced the earthly practise of polygamy in 1890.

As Blackmore and Oler were taken to Cranbrook, four officers stayed behind to talk to the approximately 1,000 residents of the community that’s known as Bountiful to assure residents that no children would be apprehended.

The reason for that extra caution is that it’s less than a year since Texas sent armed police into an FLDS compound there and rounded up all of the women and children. The action was taken after the child protection service received a complaint from someone who alleged she was an under-aged bride of a much older man, and that she was pregnant with her second child.

(Texas authorities were never able to locate the girl and all but a few of the women and children were sent back home a few months later.)……………..

……………….Alison Brewin, executive director of West Coast LEAF, said in a news release: “The lack of action to protect the fundamental freedoms and rights of the women of Bountiful has been contrary to the women’s Charter rights.

“These charges will allow the courts, the government, the women of Bountiful and all Canadians to determine the boundaries of religious freedom when women’s equality is at stake.”

  • Eat something to keep you warm – HotPot

Spent the New Years day again inside the aircraft and another week-end in HongKong…and the weather was cool, I can’t say it’s cold as compare to Canada….

Friday night went to a Korean restaurant called Kaya at CWB, this shop been quite famous thses day , thanks to a lot of people  such as  Chua Lam (Choi Lan) and magazines recommendation.

Me and my other 2 friends ordered totally 3 dishes with  complementry BanChan (6) from the restaurant –  a Korean tradition thought the taste was good the portion was a bit small and the free refill was only 2 out of the 6 choices.

    IMGP3537

    the mains dishes were:

  • The Michelin Restaurants and Hotels Guide HongKong/Macau edition 2009

Bought this guide book 2 weeks ago in HongKong…..it was published in Nov 2008 and received lots of harsh critics from local connoisseurs of food specaily with the low rating of the famous Chinese food restaurants in HongKong/Macau. However because of these critics  I went to get the book..a free marketing I guess.

    31122008121

According to the rating guide from the book their star rating(1-3 while 3 is the best) is based on quality, combination, technical skill and flair with their preparation, clarity and combination of flavours value for money and the consistency (since they had revisited  the restaurants to test them).. The location, ambience, equipments, even service are not being considered

And there are only  one   Star rating to most of the local well known Chinese favourties like Yung Kee, Forum , Fook Lam Mom( famous for those Shark’s Fins Soup, Abalone dishes)…etc, only one new Chinese Restaurant at the Four Season Hotel got a 3 Stars rating, therefore those connoisseurs saying that the westerners(actually we dont’ know the inspectors are either westerners or chinese or whatever) don’t really appreciated the art of chinese food, therefore they will treat the guide book as a joke.

Well after I have read through the book I am surprised  quite a number of worldwide Chef’s owned  like the Nobu, Spoon by Alain Ducasse at InterContinental Hotel, or Ruth’s Chris Steak House well as some other famous Hotel Restaurants offering western food  like Grissini of Grand Hyatt, Gaddi’s from Pennisula , have not received even one Star, on the other hand some small places like the Noodle/Congee shop Ho Hung Kee, at least received a recommandation.

Everyone of us have our own preference on choosing food and or restaurnats - my favourite may be your worst. I still think this book is quite  informative and useful for finding my next meal in HongKong though I will also take the service, ambience  into consideration.

  • Xmas 2008

A recap of the Xmas 2008

Woke up in the Christmas eve morning and wah-lah…..Snow Fall again.. and it’s very heavy, according to the news later it’s a record snow fall in Vancouver  and the first time White Christmas. across the whole Canada…for me I have to operate a flight to HongKong in the afternoon so have to get ready early. Because ot  the heavy snow fall the company had arranged taxi for those who needs a ride including me….

We and the passengers boarded the flight as normal, door closed and we started to wait for our turn for de-icing the aircraft before take-off, the waiting time was 2 hours at the gate as xmas eve there were tons of flights needed to depart specaily those domestic flights and there are only limited facilities at the Vancouver International airport to perform this safety related procedures… and the the control tower will not put you on the waiting list untill you havee all the passengers onboard the flgiht…We did offereed a light snack and drinks to our beloved passengers and they were very understanding for the situation. By the time we were airborne, we were 3 hours late…not that bad..but tat meant our Xmas eve and Xmas day will be inside the aircraft…..

    IMGP3452

    IMGP3453 IMGP3521 IMGP3454 IMGP3458

After over 14 hours and 28 minutes we arrived safely into HongKong and we stepped out of the aircraft  just in time to say Merry Christmas i.e 5 minutes before the clock hit mid-night of the Boxing day….

On the Boxing day  headed out to the city with my friend Alwin,  we went to the Elements Mall it was very crowded with  lots of activities, with the Highlight of a Can Can Dancing show we were a bit late therefore could only watch the show from the back….

    IMGP3463 IMGP3462

    IMGP3465

     IMGP3471 IMGP3472 IMGP3474

After that we walked around the Pacific Place before going for our Boxing day dinner at Louis Steak House and the steak there is really good and the most interesting is they still prepare the Ceaser Salad dressing and toss the salad as well as preapring the dessert Baked Alaska at your table side

    IMGP3475 IMGP3476

    IMGP3478 IMGP3489 IMGP3490 IMGP3491 IMGP3492 IMGP3497

    IMGP3498 IMGP3501

Operating the flight back to Vancouver on 27DEC afternoon, and what a surprise our Baggage/Cargo handling agent walked out of duty for 3 hours  on that afternoon since their negotiation with thier company regarding some issues brokedown. Therefore we had to bring all our stuff and  went to the Passenger Terminal directly and wait for further information around the information counter inside the restricted area

    IMGP3504 IMGP3507

Luckily after about an hour later we were allowed to board the aircraft and the passengers came to board the flight about another 45 mins after us, by the time we left we were 2 1/2 hours late…..

    IMGP3513 IMGP3514 IMGP3516 IMGP3519

Back to Vancouver on the 27DEC and went to a co-worker’s place for a xmas dinner….very tired after the flight but it’s the festive spirit which  brought me the energy, as well as the food …
