Last Tuesday was really a cool nice day in HK, shopping around CWB is once again a pleausre since the temperature was not as hot as  the previous weeks.  Around noon couldn’t think of where to ear for lunch, then my friend and I walked by this Freshness Burger from Japan  which is a chain shop like the other one called MOS Burger sering fast food…..

So at this Freshness Burger,  you will be lead to the table, place your order with the server and pay at once, then they will bring you the food….

yeah It’s Autumn, and Halloween is coming

  • Hong Kong Phenomenon

This article was written by a friend of mine on  facebook which I find it interesting to share(of cos I got her approval to share it here)….and I also realize that not only the str8 guys she’s mentioned here but actually  it’s like a generation thing  whether a st8 gal, Les/Bi/ Gay. From the  the people  I know who are working a the educational field also remind us of those who are born in the 90s are also developing a new kind of cultural attitude, I guess as a human being this is the way it goes?

    What is “Hong Kong Phenomenon”?

    1) It is a phenomenon found in metropolitan cities, but it is particularly prominent in Hong Kong.
    2) It is a phenomenon found mainly in Chinese guys aged 28 to 35.
    3) It is a phenomenon found mainly in guys who returned from overseas, especially the English speaking group.
    4) Guys with this phenomenon are typically party players, self-centred, commitment phobic, spoiled, irresponsible, immature and ignorant.
    5) Where to find these guys? LKF.(Lan Kwai Fong Central)

So how did it all started? Well, in my humble opinion, a majority of local Hong Kong people (those who have not lived or studied overseas) always feel that people who speak good English are smarter and superior. That might be due to the fact that Hong Kong was a British colony. It is not difficult to see some ex-pats here having that arrogant attitude, partially because of this pride that the local people here have implicitly given them. The same goes for what we call ABC/CBC (a rude term would be “banana”), sometimes.

I suppose back in early 80s to 90s, Hong Kong developed quickly that it made a lot of people rich. Then the whole 1997 fear hit the city and it created a tide of wealthy people moving their assets and family overseas. Therefore, not surprisingly, guys with the “Hong Kong Phenomenon” are actually kids of these well-off families and have now come back to work. Since they are fortunate enough to be able to go to good schools, they also tend to get a better job here compared to local people. They make a higher salary and can live a more luxurious life. Even if they don’t get a fat paycheck, because they don’t have to take care of their parents financially, possibly living in a nice apartment provided by their parents, they got nothing to worry about but their job (if they care). At least money wise, everything can be taken care of by their family.

After saying all these, so what? Because of their privileged background, they did not have to grow up. The attributes of this phenomenon then develop: party players, self-centred, commitment phobic, spoiled, irresponsible, immature and ignorant. I do not mean that they don’t know how to take care of themselves on a day-to-day basis. I am sure they can live alone (NOTE: not on their own because that apartment may be paid for by their parents) because they can always hire a maid to do the chores. By immature, for instance, they are insensitive of other people’s feelings. They say things offending others without knowing, such as commenting on how a 500 square feet apartment is too small for them to live in. By ignorant, they don’t know what an “ordinary” person has to deal with, what kind of challenges in life he/she is facing (job security, money, food, etc) and yet, they claim that they are so stressed already working during the week and thus need to party all out to de-stress during the weekend in LKF. They live in their own world seeing the upper scale and become self-centred. They are commitment phobic because there are way too many temptations in Hong Kong. Girls, whether local or overseas, just prefer them because of their status and background. These guys are overloaded with choices that they do not want to or need to commit to one girl.

Think about back in our parents’ time, they already had a family to take care of in late 20s/early 30s. Or even in a lot other cities now, a 30 year old guy is thinking about settling down. Hence, don’t you think this is screwed up? These guys hang out with similar people and the girls who are after them keep feeding them with the illusion that they are fine or even superior. They will always stay within their world and when they finally hit real life obstacles one day, they may not know how to handle it.

I consider myself very lucky. I had the opportunity to live and study overseas even though I don’t come from a wealthy family. I live the life I have now is because of what my family has striven to provide for me. However, I would argue I worked hard to buy every single thing I own, every piece of furniture. I am fortunate enough that I never lived in poverty. But at least, I know how much worse it can be out there. So again, cherish what we have now and don’t take it for granted.

What I wrote above about guys from overseas is not a generalization. Not everyone returning from overseas carry those attributes. I know of some very down to earth and mature ABC/CBC, guy and gal. Only in Hong Kong, you find more of this type of kid-like adults compared to say, Macau or Taiwan. And don’t get me wrong, they are not bad people. They simply don’t know what’s going on outside of their world. But seriously, if you want to see this phenomenon with your own eyes, it is not difficult to find one of these guys in LKF. Depends on what you want, they can be fun to hang out with actually as they know how to enjoy life. I’d like to go out with them once in a while. Just an advice for my lady friends, better not date one if you want a long-term and normal relationship. You will simply be babysitting a kid and he is not even your kid. It is not your job to fix his problem given he is already close to 30, if not 30 or over.

    May all beings be happy.

  • A reunion with old school mates

Last week in Hong Kong other than the usual eat and shop, I did have a mini re-union with  a couple of old school mates from Secondary school(high school) one of them I even have known since Primary School  -  after 25 years. a gathering  which I haven’t been thinking of over the years until I joined those groups in Facebook last year and eventually it helps us to reconnect since this July, and  really have to say Thank You with the help of Facebook.  At  the dinner we talked about what had happend with us over past 25 years after we left the school, and how times passes…luckily we all look more or less the same and healthy, though time does have  left her traces on us…

The place we choose for dinner is a restaurant funded by some cooperates which offer jobs for those senior who are willing and capable to work as a server, therefore all servers you  encounters are at least over 56 years of age.  Those servers are actually very professional , very courteous and I just like their can do spirit…much much much better than those I have been encountered these few months in  Hong Kong….to those young ones I just wonder  when you will show some passion or respects to your profession?

Anyway this restaurant is called Gingko House  as we went to their location at Jordan Road Kowloon side, apart from the good service, this place does offer a decent western/fusion food. and one last thing is the Tips are for donation purpose!

This year the National Day of the People’s Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn Festival fall very close in between  therefore  you can see lots of decoration with both theme in mind like the one at the Edinburgh Square Central, a very Big Lantern celebrating the National Day

More traditional stuff can be found around Lan Kwai Fong.

  • 24SEP09

Well it’s been nealy a week, was a bit lazy uploading  pictures of the food I had over the last week-end in HK

Last Saturday afternoon had  a HK style tea set as a brunch at the Hokkaido Dairy Farm Milk Restaurant at CWB.  Their  scramble eggs, Omellette are cooked in mix with  the Hokkaido Milk, frankly it’s no difference with cooking with other normal milk, though it does help to enchace the flavour of the eggs.

And at this shop you will experience  the typical, rude service from the young people of HK. They seem lke they so don’t want to serve you….hahahahaha.  Luckily I was warned by the HK online dining guide the Openrice

Macaroni with BBQ pork(Char-Siu) in soup           Scramble egg and ham with toast

    IMG_0329 IMG_0332

    3 inches Egg sandwich

    IMG_0331

At night had a very simple dinner at the Hakka Ye Ye a kind of private kitchen for some Hakka cusine. though I didn’t order the Baked Salted Chicken…. the place is quite comfortable to dine the server at least show that they are willing to work. food though ordinary, is nicely done

another signature Hakka dish  – Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetatble

    IMG_0354

White and Brown rice , Stir-fried Bitter Melon with egg white

    IMG_0355 IMG_0356

    Stuffed Tofu with minced pork,

Emperor Chicken – Steam Chicken topped with Shredded Ginger and Green Onion

    IMG_0357 IMG_0358

Dessert at Portabello ( a member of the Staunton’s group  which has a couple of restaurants around  Soho area)

Coffee Banofee Cake (a banana creme cake) and Sacher Torte

  • Fusion Vietnamese/Thai

had this fusion Vietnamese/Thai food at Nahm  which is at the Elements Mall in HongKong..This is my 2nd visit to this place within 2 years, the food is still good while  the service is somehwere hit and miss, but for sure, you will be better served when speaking in English and have some kinds of preference if you are not locals (are we still living  at the Pre-97 era?)

    IMG_0272

My friend and I had the Hanoi Lunch set for two at HKD88/person + service charges, first came the

Spicy Shredded Chicken with Banana Bud, Crushed Peanut and Mint – the Salad, actually you can taste even more flavour , you name it, you have it….coconut, basil, lemon juice………..

    IMG_0277

The appertizer and the main came together…..so our tiny table was quite packed…..

Roasted Pork Rib with garlic noodle and Spring Onion Chilli Sauce the Main, the texture of the pork rib is tender and remember to mix the sauces and noodle well before you eat, otherwise you will think that the sauce is over power….

    IMG_0280

we ordered this exotics Rambutan iced drinks, the green was the ice with mint flavour

    IMG_0283

Seaweed coconut lime rice roll with crispy sole and shallot – the appertizer ..remember this is not a sushi dish otherwise you will be disappointed. this  rice roll was served warm  with the green salad…

  • The New Canada Line of the Translink System in Vancouver BC

Thursday night, tried my very first time on the new Canada Line from Richmond to Vancouver for dinner. This sub-line of the subway/skytrain system aim to link Vancouver city with  city of  Richmond and  the Vancovuer International Airport…

On my way back, I took a coupld of pics….at the King Edward station

    IMGP4788

    IMGP4784

    IMGP4790

The system was opened on over 2 weeks and I spot some cracks……..above that should be the tracks for the Downtown bound

    IMGP4787

    IMGP4785

    IMGP4786

I think the train take me back to Richmond reasonably fast in about 15 mins even faster than I drive during rush hours…..of course like other train systems I need to walk to and from the stations….

    IMGP4789

Trainis approaching, please stand behind the yellow line…………rememebr the annoucement from the HK MTR?

     IMGP4792

    Inside the train…..

    IMGP4793

Frankly I haven’t been to the Vancouver downtown that  frequent  since 1)  I don’t like driving, 2) lots of restriction on driving within the tiny downtown area, 3) expensive for parking, However with the new train system I think  it will change….

  • Had a new kind of Mango cake last week, from the bakery shop it’s named Mango Layer Cake, it’s actually a cake with  layers of crepes,  creme and diced mangoes on a sponge cake as a base….a very creamy dessert which I at the end left the creme and crepes aside.

    IMG_0183

Went to Red Robin for a burger dinner on Mon night, it’s the 2nd time for me over the 13 years living in Vancouver..why? Though they have about 15 location throughout British Columbia, none of it is located around Richmond area…..what a pity….since they offer nice burgers….

  • What makes a Man a Man

Been listening to this song for a few years. it’s originally  written in French  by Charles Aznavour a song writer singer from France. I love the lyric very much  though I don’t know if they have been translated correctly…. just found the above clip and finally got the full version of the lyrics..

MY mum and I we live alone a large apartment is our home in Fairhome Towers
We have to keep us company 2 dogs, a cat a parakeet , some plants & flowers.
I help my mother with the chores. I wash, she dries, I do the floors, we work together
I shop & sew & cook a bit, though she does too, I must admit, I do it better.
At night I work in a strange Bar, Impersonating every star. I’m quite deceiving.
The customers come in with doubt and wonder what i”m all about but leave believing.
I do a very special show, where I am nude from head to toe after strip teasing.
Each night the men look so surprised, I change my sex before their eyes.
Tell me if you can what makes a man a man.

Around 3 o’clock or so I meet with chumes to have a bite, to eat & conversation.
We talk & empty out our hearts on every subject from the arts to liberation.
We love to pull apart someone and spread some gossip just for fun or start a rumor.
We let our hair down so to speak and mock ourselves with tongue-in-cheek, & inside humor.
So Many times we have to pay for having fun and being gay, it’s not amusing.
There’s always those that spoil our games by finding fault and calling names, always accusing.
They draw attention to themselves at the expense of someone else, it’s so confusing.
Yet they make fun of how I walk and imitate the way I talk.
Tell me if you can what makes a man a man.

My masquerade comes to and end when I go home to bed again, Alone & Friendless.
I close my eyes and think of hime & fantaise what might have been. My dreams are endless.
We love each other but it seems , this love is only in my dreams it’s so one-sided.
Yes in this life, I must confess, the search for love and happiness is Unrequited.
I ask myself what I have got, what I am & what I’m not, what have I given.
The answers come from those who make the rules, that some of us must break just to keep living.
I know my life is not a Crime, I’m just a victim of my time, I stand defenseless.
But nobody, nobody has the right to be the Judge of what is right for me
Tell me if you can What makes a man a man
