Glee – the TV series
It’s such a popular TV show for the past 2 seasons. I, though not a big fan, still watch it whenever I’m free. So this is what I think about ‘Glee’ after this past Sunday.
I was watching an episode on Season 3 called ‘Detention Class’ where the main theme was about experiencing your first bouts of ‘passion’. Essentially, talking about adolescent sexual experiences. What kind of message is Glee trying to convey here? That it is alright for high school kids to have sex? Yes, you have to be at least 16 to watch Glee, but we all know how accessible the series is to kids below 16 what with youtube and all. How can a society preserve morality when having sex while one is still in school is promoted so freely. One may say that the episode simply accepts that adolescent sex exists and all the episode is trying to do is to promote doing the responsible thing. But the message can so easily be construed as condoning adolescent sex as well. Call me conservative, but that’s just how I feel.

I don’t know that having sex is being “promoted” by Glee. Lots and lots of high school students are already having sex. The show is reflecting what exists and adding some messages of positive self-image and responsibility, to boot.
@christao408 - on this episode, one of the high school final year girl said, I did it with him because I love him and I have no regrets(luckily she did not get pregnant, otherwise she will be 100% regret) , while another boy asked his friend how to use the condoms, his answer was no need to use it just pull it out( yeah keep on doing it and get your STD)….now in this case if an even younger kid watching it alone at home or from the internet without parental guidance, What kind of message he/she will receive….? just like what I’ve said at the end:But the message can so easily be construed as condoning adolescent sex as well.
I liked the very first episode of Glee, but that’s it. It all went down hill from there.
