Flight Report JL017
Whenever I want to go to Tokyo, I usually take JAL from Vancouver directly, 8 years ago(2002) I tried their Seaons Executive class which was the very old Big seat with and IFE system of 9 video channels(at the same time our company was offering the Flat Bed a.k.a the sliding bed with an AVOD IFE system with 25 movies, 20 videos, 50 CDs….)
Yesterday I flew on JAL Biz class again and despite they hv changed their seat to the sliding one, they have cut a lot on offering inflight.
First thing after checked-in, I went to their Sakura Lounge, a cosy enviroment, with the help your self style of service, so I grabbed their own brand of cup udon and a drink for my breakfast, once finished just return used item to the designated area for disposal. Once on board the upper deck of the B744, it’s like meeting an old friend cos the layout is 90% the same as out old seat 60″ seat pitch how are you? Havn’t seen you for a long time!
As I remember JAL doesn’t offer personal amenity kits, just the tooth brush set, ear plug, however I do like their slippers, and now they offer the refreshing face and eye masks instead of the bottled moisturizers
The slippers and the headset. as before no Welcome Drinks on ground, so you normallly have your first drinks after take off.
First meal with 3 choices, the Western, Chinese, or Japanese, I chose the Japanese one, with the main dish of grilled Salmon which was quite good
Since there were no cheese and fruit offered the last course would be the dessert, however as they use the same caterer in Vancouver as us, I actually tried both of these desserts before…then visisted the wash room….so far the most dull looking one I’ve seen in Biz class
oh the vintage Airshow(Map) actually on the flight they were using their Magic II IFE which only has 14 choices on both movies and videos….between meals they don’t have much too offer either the cup noodles which I had at the lounge or these pre-packed cakes from Japan..
Second meal…..I chose the Western…..cos I wanted to have some fruits…..at least they use the creamer from Japan
Their cabin crew are courteous, the Japanese ones were polite but tend to be more proactive only when interact with Japanese pax maybe because of their English, I actually understood only about 60% of what they were saying…the one from HKG…hm….well I should have talked with her in English just to test her out…hahahaha
Overall I cannot say they are Bad…the experience just like I was sitting on a Premium Economy Class instead of a real Biz Class, their tray is actully the Economy class one with the differences of removing the plastic wrap for the cutlery and using a couple more of chinaware i.e. cup and plates and the offering of the Japanese meal choices..
For sure if I had to pay full fare to fly Biz class on JAL, I would have chosen other options..

I agree, the pictures you took made me feel like JAL is not bad, but it didn’t stand out for its price.
their business class does not seem to measure up to Cathy Pacific or Singapore from looking at the photos.
It seems like most airlines have been cutting back, cutting back, cutting back. There is a fine line at which point it starts to feel sorry and tacky.
@Wangium - @stevew918 - @christao408 - yes quite a disappointment when you’re prepared to fly on Biz Class and the hard product is weak…
From your photos, it seems okay. Hope you did not pay too much for that business class ticket?
@CurryPuffy - I just redeemd my points for the flight, still, the whole experience is still FAR from a international /tran- continents Biz Class, hope the returning experience will be better as departing from their home port….
